SHE SAID WE GOTTA HOLD ON TO WHAT WE GOTIT DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERANCE IF WE MAKE IT OR NOT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So the snow wasn't going to ever let up. Lily was fairly sure of that as she tugged her gloves off and tossed them onto the table she had choosen near the first place in the Three Broom Sticks. She had spent all day going over patterns for plates and napkins. She had been stressed the importance of having a pleasing pattern because that was what your first china was based off of. Lily had said wouldn't it be easier to just get plastic, and had been met with a mortified look from the woman behind the counter, and further more Lily feared the woman was actually going to faint dead away. That would be decidedly not good. So she had offered the woman a faint little smile, and told her she'd take the book and show her husband to be, the patterns and choose with him. The woman sniffed and said something about if she thought letting a man pick was a good idea. Lily wasn't sure if that was an insult to Severus or mankind in general. Still it had stung her, and she'd pointed out they allowed a woman without a wedding band to work in this business. She wasn't making friends.
She had promised to spend some time trying to relaxe, but that wasn't working all that well. At least she knew that Mary would come spend some time with her and she wouldn't be all by herself. Lily mothered people, but Mary mothered her, and it had been Mary who'd come to her over Severus being outside the portrait. Lily was convinced she might have slugged him had been his normal ah.charming self with her. She still got growly over the m word. Than again Mary was also Muggle born. Lily ran a hand through her hair pushing it back from her face and letting it fall over her shoulders. It was damp from the snowflakes outside. Her bangs falling over her left eye she was sans her ribbons today. Which really wasn't odd given Lily started the day with them lost them during it, and usually had the returned by evening.
She had fire whiskey set in front of her and she had been sipping it to warm herself up. On her lap even Snowflake gave a little shudder and nestled into Lily closer. She was cold this weather had to go soon. Though curling around Othello was warm. He was safely with Severus in the warm. Her human felt she had to go out in the cold to look at squares of paper with pictures, she could do that at home. However, the lady behind the counter had not appriciated when Snowflake had batted a book off the counter in a temper. She didn't like the smug woman behind the counter a bit, and didn't hesitate to let her know. That had gotten her human to leave the shop, and she was glad she'd done her job properly. That woman had ruffled her fur.
The warm milk she was presented with made her purr loudly and she glanced up at Lily resisting the urge to swat at the strands of red hair that dangled down curling at the end. She wanted the warm milk more, maybe in a bit.She heard Lily's stomach growl and she paused licking a paw casually before swatting the girl pointedly. Causing Lily to start.
"Bloody hell." she said looking down to the cat. Sitting her almost spilled cup back on the table. "Your worse than Severus you know that!" the cat much like the man in question didn't seemed to be sorry for this. "Fine, I'll order something." she waved on of the waitress's over her gaze on the door though waiting for Mary.

Mary pulled her duffle coat tighter around her. She was starting to wonder if this weather was magically induced, and if she would ever snowball again, given that even she was getting tired of the snow, the grey was getting depressing and she was more than ready for the spring whenever that should come. School had been going well enough, she was decent enough in healing that she would be able to patch up simple wounds, broken bones and the like, but her main focus was in the subjects she needed to be an auror, not that she was altogether worried about it, she had been working on the revision since the start of the year. The same could not be said for half of the sixth and seventh years in the tower, the usual people who despite having gone through it all before were only now acknowledging the fact that tests were coming, tempers were getting frayed and Mary was sick and tired of it, she would be docking points if she got snapped at once more, that much she was sure of.
She knew that Lily was going through wedding preparations at the same time as she had to deal with her schoolwork and, as ever, extra transfiguration homework and the potion that Slughorn had she and Severus brewing, in short it sounded like she needed a break as much as Mary felt she needed one from the tower, so when Lily had asked her to meet her at the Three Broomsticks, she had jumped at the chance. Lily looked after pretty much everyone who would sit still long enough to let her, Mary figured that whether Lily was a year older than her or not, she needed someone to look out for her. She would have slugged Severus if it had been necessary back then, not hexed him, she’d have done it the muggle way and blacked his eye, she had already given him a fussing at before, as had Molly. As it was she had simply told Lily that he was there and kept an ear on what was going on. She had been wary about Lily getting back with him, but she had always accepted that it was Lily’s choice and no one else’s, that she was happier, that she clearly felt safer when Severus was around, Mary’s only problem was the dark magic given her experience with it, but then he never used the fact that he could do that, the fact that he was of a dark line, as an excuse to do what he would to others.
Mary had no use for people who would tell someone how to run their lives and get scandalised at the smallest thing that others disagreed with, the woman was likely lucky that she had not had to contend with an irate Mary on top of Snowflake. Still, done was done and Lily was away from that for now, and Mary was going to make sure that Lily did not stress over it, or else, that had been pretty much made clear as being Mary’s view of things. Oh there wasn’t much she could do about or else what, but that was something they could worry about if it came to it. As the Three Broomsticks neared, Mary checked the pouch she kept her money in and walked right on in.
She walked over to the bar and got a butterbeer, the people who ran this place knew the students well, she knew she wasn’t going to get away with asking for a firewhiskey, however much she needed to warm up. She could likely sip Lily’s if the other redhead didn’t mind and get away with it, but they wouldn’t actually serve it to her. Oh well. She looked towards the fire and awed quietly to see Snowflake settled on her lap. She walked over with her butterbeer in time to hear Lily scold the kneazle, “Well I should hope that she is as bad as Severus, he keeps you healthy.” She knew that she was going to get a look over that, she would be as unapologetic over it as Snowflake and Severus. She sat down, looking to the waitress to order once Lily was done, “How did pattern hunting go?”

She said we got to hold onto what we've got it doesn't make a differance if we make it or not ----- Ifit were just the tests that was stressing the red head she'd be doing wonderfully, however it seemed like there was little to be done for it. She herself was having nightmares about wedding cakes at this point. She had asked Severus one evening stretched across his lap if he thought it might not be easier to elope. He'd given her a very serious look and told her not to tempt him. Lily knew his headaches were worse because of her headache over the whole ordeal, even with the little papers that had now ceased to follow him around begging to be picked. Lily had gotten out of school and come here a little early just to get some time looking around before her lunch date with Mary. Her fellow House Mates were in a worse mood.Lily had been preping for the coming exams since school had started so she was okay with that.
----- It wasn't Lily's fault that she was more than happy to take care of others she had been like that since she was a little girl. She had started out taking care of Severus. Though he also took care of her in turn. She would do it for anyone who needed it because that was just how she was. Lily certainly wouldn't have approved of Mary blacking Severus's eye even if she was mad at him. Than again not to many people had ever seen the little boy he'd been when his father had gotten after him. It was one of the reasons Lily kept her temper as checked around Severus as she could. She didn't want to wind up just someone else who had let him down. She knew Mary was wary and worried over her. Still she loved him with all of her being soul included and being apart had been worse on her than some mis-spoken words and she hadn't been innocent of snapping back at him. She it was only proper they should make up. Lily knew that he hadn't pretended to be in the right. Than there had been Molly who'd gotten after him to. Since you can't have an arguement that big, and not have it known among the girls.
----- Lilyhad not really known that the woman behind the counter was being condescending she had not thought about it her mind was elsewhere. She could have done without all this extra work. After while one pattern merged into another pattern. She had the book but had not intention of looking at it. She was going to take it to Severus and inform him men had no common sense when it came to patterns, that they shouldn't be allowed to pick something--did he have any ideas. She trusted his judgement regardless of what some snotty pure blood behind a counter had to say. Currently it was placed in a bag on the side of her chair. Her long hair was falling over her shoulders and curling at the ends One hand gently rubbed her kneazles ears as she quietly relaxed there in her chair. She knew Mary would be there on time she was rarely late. ----- If Mary wanted to have some of her fire wine Lily would always switch drinks with her it wasn't like they would look at her funny on that account. Lily didn't mind butter beer. She liked harder drinks though she chalked that up to the irish blood. Since it had to be it. She liked stuff she could put in tea or coffee majorly. She laughed when Mary commented on Severus keeping her healthy. "Well of course he does the slytherin way if possiable." her tone was dry as she shook her head at the other girl faintly and amused as well. Nodding to the seat smiling "Don't mind me not standing because Snowflake is comfortable." she said as the waitress came to her she looked up at the woman. "I'll have the bread bowl and soup of the day." she said. A groan escaped her at the question about pattern hunting "It went...is all I can really say on the subject, I mean it was lovely at first but the woman, tossed a whole lot of patterns at me, oh this or this or this." she rolled her eyes and took a sip of the fire whiskey. Waiting until she'd ordered and the waitress had gone to offer her some of her firewhiskey. "Than had the nerve to tell me that Severus likely didn't have any taste in pattern picking, as though he were not important in the choice." Lily made a face.

Tests were not stressing Mary out in any way shape or form, she was not as brainy as a Ravenclaw, but she was hard working and always had been. She had made a choice not to let her delayed return to Hogwarts hinder her, and she was well in the habit of preparing for tests long before some would think to acknowledge that they were indeed coming. She didn’t think for one moment it was the tests really bothering Lily, so it had to be the wedding preparations, and she might not have been able to see Lily’s dreams, but sleeping in the same room as her and hearing the pig is in the cake did cause her some concern, especially given she knew who the pig was. So with that, the simple fact of the matter was that Lily had to get out of the school and relax, soon, before she sent herself stircrazy, besides which, no one deserved to be stuck with the pig in their nightmares.
Lily could not be blamed for wanting to look after others, she was motherly in nature, along with most of the other redhead girls in the Gryffindor commons. Mary was motherly also and she would certainly help with the younger children, but Lily was a priority of hers given that the girl really needed just one person to look out for her in Mary’s opinion. If she had have hit Severus, and she had been close, she would have felt guilty about it if she had been made aware of the homelife he had come from. She made no bones about it though, she was protective of any she cared about and Lily was her best friend. Mary was naturally worried when they had gotten back together, not because of Severus himself but because she knew he was the only one that could break her heart the way she had already been through. She would have warned Lily to think about it, at the same time it had been she up late with her, holding her, arguing with her that she would make it no better drowning it with cookie dough, that she wasn’t sleeping, she was miserable and it couldn’t hurt this much if she didn’t still love him so go talk to him already. Not that she had gotten very far but she had done what she could. Severus had gotten it in the neck from quite a few people, if he hadn’t figured out what he had done wrong from that there would have been no helping him.
Mary would have picked up that the woman was being condescending, things would not have gone well from there whether it had been Lily or she herself at the end of it. Mary was quite capable of making her thoughts known, and of making people see that business could be taken elsewhere if such became necessary. She wouldn’t have been violent or aggressive over it, but the woman would have had her condescending nature thrown right back at her and down her throat. Things might have gotten ugly from there depending on just how the woman took that bur Mary was not one to care when she had been vexed. She had gone too far on occasion, but it was always for a good cause.
Mary chuckled at Lily’s comment, “Well yes, I know he does it the Slytherin way, it’s what comes of being Slytherin after all.” Lily ought to know what to expect there, did know what to expect given that she had known him for as long as she had. She nodded when Lily said to excuse her not standing up, leaning in to give her a hug and Snowflake a scratch behind the ear, “It never is wise to disturb a resting cat of any kind, I know that well enough.” She sat down and looked to the waitress, “I’ll have the same please, I’ve heard good things about the soup of the day for today.” She pulled a face, “Well you’ve been, you have the book, it’s something you and Severus can look at without interference from the people expecting you to pay for the pleasure.” She poured just a measure of Lily’s firewhiskey into her butterbeer, just to warm herself up, she had a fair few dock workers in her family, drinking hard was more or less in her blood though she showed restraint. She gave a pfft, “That’s what you get with people paid to run other peoples’ lives for them, or at least it’s how they see it. I’ll bet between you and Severus, or one of you alone, you can get the whole lot down to three and then one quicker than any crone who thinks she knows what’s good for you.”

She said we got to hold onto what we've got it doesn't make a differance if we make it or not ----- Marywas fortunate to fall into the study buddy catagory with Lily so she had extra information and help if she needed it. Lily had always taken her education very seriously she was at school to learn. Unlike some Slytherin girls she was not there for a match or to find herself a way into a better family. Mary she oftened teased about the Diggory boy. Since she knew that Mary liked him more than she would ever admit too. She was a red head they could almost form there own little club. She still had the vial of sleeping potions Severus had created for her it promised a good sleep. She rarely recalled her dreams after that. The issue with that was it made her oversleep which was never really a good thing. The pig would likely haunt her dreams off and on until the spring. Severus would have to deal with the being kicked if the nightmare came, and the girls of course would hear the rustle of sheets if she were in the dorm room.
----- Watchingout for others was merely second nature to Lily and she did it without thought. It was not something she would ever change even if she could. She was bound for a job as an Auror for that very reason. There was no sense in going into a War if she couldn't help to save people. That was why she was focusing on the more aggressive--and yes more dangerous side of things. She'd already talked it over with Severus all was left was to explain it to her mother which would be--interesting. Lily knew she'd never have a normal job like her mother and father. She wouldn't have been content with just money like Tuney was. So she had to do what suited her best and how she felt she'd most be able to make a difference. Yes, she would have liked being just a house wife and mother but again she refused to trap herself in just one single role. If she would have hit Severus it would have put a strain on her friendship with her. No matter how anger or willing to break things off with him she had been. No matter what he had called her. Deep down he was still the same little boy who'd come sleep on the couch when he was having a bad time at home. The same little boy she'd seen the effects of what hitting did. Lily knew Mary lurked because she'd been there to hug her and lead her back into the Dorms. Lily also knew that she'd support her what ever decession. Given she had been given a fussing for not talking to Severus when it was clear that both of them were misriable. Things had improved once Slughorn had given the both of them detention.
----- Thewoman wasn't married herself and so Lily had no idea how she could help her make marriage plans. Given her attitude she was fairly sure that the woman would not be getting married anything soon either. Lily had a firmer hold on her temper than Mary did than again she was older and she had also been learning Occulmency from Severus. She also planned to inform him he was only male and apparently had no opinion on patterns to hear the woman speak. Lily knew all to well that Mary was given to take things a step to far, it was part of her charm after all. Though Lily herself was a red-head and given to lashing out in a similar manner. It was surprising that there dorm room was not a battle zone. The thing was they were all of a similar mind in there so it was alright on most accounts. She could always ask Molly to go have a word with the woman she was sure Molly would also be more than happy to drop in on the woman.
----- Lily tipped her head and made a pssh sound. "To hear him talk I am quiet Slytherin." she laughed softly."Of course that also had to do with my choice of colors for Christmas Dinner, but it was an occassion where dress up is expected." she explained quietly. Lily could only smirk "Yes Dittany to patch up my poor claw marks." she said with a shake of her head. "I have a small bottle that was made for me." she added. Bringing an arm up to hug Mary back. Snowflake purred and dipped her head into the petting. Lily hadn't heard anything about the soup of the day. That was very perceptive of her she knew so she just nodded in trust of Mary's words. Since she knew she'd be asked if she had eatten. Not that the woman trusts a man to know china." Lily rolled her eyes faintly. "I bet Sev's seen the inside of the kitchen more often than she has." she was still a touch ticked about that. Lily laughed "Well I am sure we can by throwing darts at the patterns, thats how I threatend to choose colors for my wedding, which by the way is white and emerald." she didn't say and probly didn't have to that she let Sev choose, and he picked that color solely for her eyes.

Mary was lucky that really she had only the tests to worry about being as she had them well in hand, though she did pay attention to what Lily was doing as head girl, being as she knew that she was one of those being considered for it for next year and it was not something that she would shirk were she asked, as much as she knew that certain circles would test her as they could not liking a second consecutive muggle born taking the role. Other than observing, that was not something that she needed to overly concern herself with at the moment, nor needed to do anything more than she did towards being as she was already motherly in nature. Mary had known of the little papers that had followed Lily and Severus, of course she had been in History of Magic and had known what had happened, she had threatened to hex more than a couple of those that sniggered for the stories they had spread. Mary herself was as chipper as she could be expected to be, she knew that she had everything well in hand in her schooling, she half wondered if that was her blood, muggleborns had had to work hard from the beginning just to catch up with those who had known of magic for eleven years.
Mary had admired Lily in her second year when Mary was in her first, that was for sure, and Lily had kept her under her wing when magic had been new to her, and then she had been sure of herself and that had been that really. She knew that Lily was perfectly happy to take care of others, she wouldn’t be Lily if she weren’t, it was a deep part of her, but Mary had simply decided that one of those who did not need looking after should make sure that Lily was taken care of in turn, she had quietly nominated herself for that job and it had very smoothly become habit. Not that Lily needed much looking after, and not that she didn’t have people there for her like Severus, but Mary had hexed the Marauders more than once when Lily had been upset, more so Peter who was a creep and James who she had seen upset her telling her that he’d leave Severus alone for a date, like Lily should prostitute herself to keep another from harm. She had held her temper around Severus, just, only because she knew that Lily had known him since their childhood. She had even tried to tell him that trying to go after her right now was only going to make things worse, and Severus should have been sensible to know this for himself but he had threatened to camp outside the portrait and Lily had needed warning. She would have felt guilty had she hit Severus and Lily had told her what he had been through, she didn’t know the full story nor did she pry into another’s history, but she was certainly more likely to get into trouble on Lily’s behalf. Mary was always going to be worried for Lily when they got back together, as much as she had been the one to fuss at her for not talking to Severus when they were clearly both miserable about it. At the end of the day Lily was happier around him, and felt safer around him, Mary an eye on her, and had been the one to try and keep her together from leading her back into the dorm up until the day Lily and Severus had sorted themselves out, but would never interfere for that reason. She and Lily had argued in the kitchen one night before Slughorn had gotten involved, when Mary had found her eating cookie dough. She had before then threatened to stay awake herself so that Lily could see what she was having to watch happen to her best friend and Lily had called her on it, two tired irritable redheads had gone at it, and said things that they didn’t mean, especially Mary asking Lily since when Petunia had started coming to school and Lily staying home, and then started eating cookie dough together like nothing had happened.
If Mary disliked anything, it was people who were condescending, and then expected to be paid for being so. She would not let anyone run her own life, whether they were old and crotchety or had dark magics to call upon. She would have told Lily that she could take her business somewhere where an old crone who had not been married wouldn’t be there to dictate her life to her, and she would have spoken loud enough that the woman would have heard. Mary had a temper, that was to be sure, but she had curbed down on it a lot since starting school and only very rarely lost it now, though it could be spectacular when she did. She would still go over the line in the cause of a friend. The dorm room remained battle free because the four of them were so like minded, they didn’t need to clash, it simply didn’t happen. Mary would have liked to have seen Molly go to the woman, she ‘d have got Severus and gone with, the moment she was condescending it would have been a competition to see who could hex her first, given how all three of them felt about Lily.
She chuckled, “Being fair, the colours do suit you, but what makes me think there was something more to it than that, hmm?” She nodded, “That would be if you have a hand left to save with dittany, of course.” Mary was quite willing to fuss over Snowflake some before sitting down, giving the kneazle another scratch when she leaned into her touch. Mary knew the menu here, she had eaten here and in the Leaky Cauldron over holidays, also the soup of the day was always delicious, but today did have one of her favourites so it was always worth it. She would make sure that Lily did eat if she were at all inclined not to, Lily knew that well enough. She nodded, “I would bet he has.” She had been over one holidays and between Rose, Lily and Severus had been fairly spoiled when it came to food, of course she had always been ready to chip in where she could in that regard and wasn’t a slouch in the kitchen herself. She laughed, “I’d pick at least one out you can explain why you chose it, you know your mothers will be onto you if they think you did that.” She could well guess that emerald had something to do with Severus, but then he really did know more about this kind of thing than certain people gave him credit for, “I could always go with you the next time, best possibly expected behaviour.” Not that that necessarily meant much if Lily were poked at.

She said we got to hold onto what we got It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not.We got each other and thats all right for love we'll give it a shot Oh,we've got to hold on Ready or Not You live for the fight When thats all that you've got - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Lily wasn't above teaching Mary how to be Head Girl she showed her what responsiabilities were and she let her in on how best to make an impression in the proper areas. Lily's biggest concern over her was that Mary had that red head temper and she didn't keep it as checked as she should. Lily had reassured Mary that it was okay, because she didn't mind in the least let them laugh and let them make fun. Anyone who poked at Lily just got a shrug and the answer that she was after all a Tiger of course he got a torn shirt. It usually made people stop for a second and that second was all Lily really needed to turn and leave. Us Muggle borns have to stick together had been Lily's response, Oh she had gotten a better education in four years than most Pure bloods got over there life time. The fear that Severus had explained to her about abusing magic had made her careful. She'd shared that with the other muggle born that came in. Lily worked hard because she wanted to make something of herself. This wasn't just school and than off to being a House Wife somewhere. No she wanted to see the world change otherwise she'd not be doing all she was doing now. When Mary had gotten to Hogwarts Lily had shown her the ropes and made sure she was safe from being picked on by older kids who liked to. She made them think twice it was the same thing she had done for Marley when she'd gotten there. It was harder on Muggle borns given people like Malfoy wandering around. When Sev's friends had hexed her with Dark Magic she had, had a fit. She'd hit Mulciber and she'd hit him hard she was to angry to toss a spell. It had not been funny and Mary had to go to Saint Mungos. Where was that funny ? It wasn't and that was a poor excuse. She had vented her temper on him, she'd wound up in Detention with Dumbledore. She'd admitted full to not being the least bit sorry, and if she were in the same situation again she'd have done nothing differently. Lily had long been a good choice for the Order. Dumbledore had let her know about it at that point. She and other Order Members started to have meetings. Still the restriction of Sixth Year or Older stood. It was why she'd waited until this year to invite Mary and Marley. Lily was always going to be happier around Severus. He was her soulmate as odd as it might sound, even as a romantic Lily had never quiet believed in such thing, until she was presented with solid proof. It was as it was. She knew Mary was worried if things were actually right between them, and she loved her for it. Words had been said and had it been anyone else other than Mary they would have been having a long stay with Pompy upstairs. Lily wasn't above hexing when she was hurt. She was trying to sort herself out and it wasn't happening. Not to mention that sleep only brought nightmares she couldn't recall when she awoke. The talking to Severus thing couldn't be forced and couldn't be rushed or even harsher words might have been spat by her and that would ruin everything she just wanted to numb a bit from the situation to get a better feel for it. Slughorn had seen to it that it actually happened. Lily wasn't enchanted with the idea of allowing any of her friends go to check in on that woman and do things about what had happened. She was fairly sure that the woman would be suffering and badly for having a waspish tongue. Since Sev had his days and Molly was well Molly was a mama bear.Than Mary who took it upon herself to avenge any grievence to her. "Oh see my darling little kitty knows better than to take a hand, than she'd simply not be fed." she answered with a faint shrug of her shoulders. Taking a small sip of the firewhiskey Lily made a face. "Ah, well I did use the means to an end to get his mother to dinner I couldn't resist having her there and she pleaded off last year." a faint flush touched her cheeks "I found out that tears work as well on my second mum as they do her son." Lily sighed and handed the book over. "I like the forest creatures." she shrugged. "There in red though and not blue or green patterns. I assumed I'd like roses or lily's maybe but these have does, and foxes and birds." she flipped to the page the set was on and pointed it out. "Its just not traditional." she muttered as she left the book with Mary and the set she liked Marked Lily thanked the waitress who returned with a thick vegtable broth. It smelled divine and she even brought Lily and Mary a pot of tea to go with it. Again there was thank you's exchanged and Lily merely raised a brow at her. "Mmhmm, and diplomacy fails you when someone gets uppity with me Mary." she helped herself to a spoon of the stew and nodded approvingly. Discreetly sliding the rest of her Firewhiskey to Mary. She had only needed a nip of it to get warm and shouldn't be drinking anyways. She arched a brow. "I know its not traditional but all the little animals, make me so happy, its like plates that are glad to see you."- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - My Partner(s) In Crime:Mary

Mary was a quick learner, there was always that to be said for her. She could tell one more about the history of magic from classes and her own reading than many who had been brought up in this world. So when Lily was teaching her what needed to be done as part of the Head Girl role, it was no different. She knew herself, and she knew her stumbling block in her temper. It was always going to be there and there would be times more important to come where keeping that temper would be important. As to whether she could keep it now, well she was much improved in that regard than she had been when she had first entered school. She had had her big moments, hexing James chief among them, but it was something that had been made clear to her would not be appropriate when she took on the role of prefect. Mary had nodded as Lily said to let them laugh, but it was still no easier, because she was very mama bear over Lily. Of course it was very much down to Lily that Mary had had the start in school she had, she had not been one who would have abused magic in any case, but she certainly got over any idea that there was no responsibility with what she could do quickly. There had also been very much another incentive to learn all that she could, she like Lily was not intending on being a housewife, she knew what dangers were out there, she had experienced first hand the destructive nature of magic turned to ill use.
Mary had valued the help at the start greatly, especially with the way certain Slytherins could be. She specialised more in defensive and counter charms than hexing. Lily had a charm that bounced hexes back at people, it was perhaps a mixed blessing that Mary had not been able to use that one, she unlike Mulciber would have felt guilty about it afterwards. What she had been hit with had landed her on the unknown spells ward in Saint Mungo’s, it had been as close to an unforgivable as could be without actually being one. The whole thing had knocked Mary back, she had freaked out severely when she woke up in Saint Mungo’s, the memory of the pain bringing a scream to her lips before her body had registered that it wasn’t there anymore, she had still been in shock and it had taken some considerable effort from the staff to calm the girl down. Even then it was a good while before she would leave her dorm by herself, she had had the shakes even contemplating it. Lily had been good for her there, she had given her the time that she had needed to put herself back together. She was a lot more careful now as a result of that incident, it was something that she would never quite forget. She had not needed much thought over joining the Order. She knew that what had happened could happen to her again, but she was a muggleborn, it could happen to her at any time whether she took part in fighting it or not, so she was going to be proactive, and perhaps save others that pain in being so. Bravery was living despite fear, not never feeling it, after all. Mary loved Lily, she was her best friend, confidante, defender and one that Mary would defend, and all she wanted was to see her happy. She had been irritable through lack of sleep herself, or she would never have said what she had, and when she saw Lily’s wand half raised, she knew that anyone else would have been hurt by now, some survival instinct had told her to hold her words.
Mary would have been quite happy to go and see the patterns woman. She had a temper though and she knew as much as Lily did that it would test that temper, sometimes keeping it was matter of not bringing oneself into temptation. She was better with holding her temper, sure, but she was not quite there yet.
She chuckled, “Yes, the old adage about not biting the hand that feeds one. Yet I’d imagine anywhere else is fair game.” Snowflake was a kneazle, she knew that being too confrontational was not conducive towards being fed, as much as she could make her displeasure very much known. She put on a mock scandalised air for Eileen’s sake, “Oh Lily Evans, you rogue.” She certainly knew the power that tears had over a man, not that she used them, she wasn’t altogether sure that she could pull it off for one. “Ah well, it was for a good cause, about time she did considering she’s down the road.” Mary had seen Eileen once or twice, she had been respectful and said hello. She didn’t know everything that had gone on in the past and didn’t pretend to, she had simply done what was polite. She awwed over the pattern that Lily had in mind, she couldn’t help that, she had a soft spot for forest creatures, and for the owls in the owlery, more or less any animal come to that. “Well see, what good is traditional if it doesn’t make you happy? Anyone who uses the kitchen ought to be happy to be there, so it doesn’t matter a fig what others think about it.” Well, Severus mattered of course, Mary knew that he cooked, but certainly no one else should really have a say in it. She thanked the waitress and poured herself a cup of tea before taking her first spoonful of the soup. She had known what to expect and she still enjoyed it as much as she had the first time she had tasted it. She chuckled at the raised brow, “I’m getting better…but yes, diplomacy isn’t always easy when one party intends to use as little of it as possible.” She poured a touch of firewhiskey into her tea, she didn’t have too much at once, she just enjoyed the warm buzz, “Yes, they’d have caught my eye as well, I think. Though if they were to follow one chanting use me, that would be a bit much.” She couldn’t help the ghost of a smile at that, though she knew that the parents responsible for that deserved a good talking to.
