HOGWARTS GROUNDS

Board Threads Posts Last Post
No New Posts the courtyard

Hogwarts is hidden from Muggle eyes. The castle is bewitched so that if a Muggle looks at it, all they see is a moldering old ruin with a sign over the entrance saying DANGER, DO NOT ENTER, UNSAFE. It might also be Unplottable The castle is "(a) huge, rambling, quite scary-looking castle, with a jumble of towers and battlements. Like the Weasleys' house, it isn't a building that Muggles could build, because it is supported by magic.Hogwarts castle is located atop a cliff overlooking a lake. The lake is to the south of the castle and the front foors face generally to the west There is a small underground inlet, it's entrance covered with hanging ivy, that leads to a stony beach below the castle at the base of the cliff. From here, a path leads up to the front door of the castle. A road runs around the lake to the village of Hogsmeade, where the railway station is located. From the descriptions, Hogwarts would seem to be in Scotland. The grounds are quite extensive, taking in a large forest and enough open space to not hear loud noises. There are entrances to the grounds, which seems to imply that there is a wall or fence enclosing the entire area. The main entrance gate is flanked by pillars on which stand statues of winged boars.

No New Posts the black lake & lawns

The lake is located on the south side of the castle, which stands on a cliff overlooking the water. It is about half a mile in diameter and the Hogwarts plumbing network drains into it. A number of magical creatures inhabit the lake, including a surprisingly friendly giant squid, often seen near the surface, a colony of merpeople inhabiting the bottom, and a population of grindylows. The grounds around it are popular spots during good weather to recline and hang out.

No New Posts the whomping willow

The Whomping Willow is a very valuable magical tree on the Hogwarts grounds. The tree is extremely violent, striking viciously with its branches at anything that comes within reach.

Headmaster Albus Dumbledore planted the Willow to guard a secret passageway to the Shrieking Shack, a building in Hogsmeade. Remus Lupin was smuggled to the passageway each month at the full moon, where he could transform in the Shack into his werewolf form, without risking harm to others

No New Posts the forbidden forest

The Forbidden Forest is a large, dark forest to the east of Hogwarts Castle. It is usually referred to simply as "the Forest" and in the film series as the "Dark Forest". It is strictly forbidden to all students, except during Care of Magical Creatures lessons and, on rare occasions, detentions.

Among the plant species within the Forest are trees such as beech, oak, pine, sycamore, and yew, as well as undergrowth including knotgrass and thorns. Though the Forest is vastly dense and wild, there are a few paths and clearings. Rubeus Hagrid, who frequently travels into the Forest for various reasons mostly makes these. The Forest is also home to an assortment of creatures.

HOGSMEADE

Board Threads Posts Last Post
No New Posts hogsmeade shoppes

Hogsmeade is the only entirely wizarding village in Britain According to tradition it was founded over a thousand years ago, around the same time as Hogwarts, by Hengist of Woodcroft as he was fleeing persecution by Muggles It's a picturesque little village of thatched cottages and shops, with enchanted candles hanging in the trees during the holidays.

As Hogsmeade is located just down the road from Hogwarts, the school and the village have always shared a special relationship. On select Saturdays throughout the school year the village is filled with Hogwarts students, who are allowed to visit beginning in their third year ome of the Hogwarts teachers, including Hagrid and Dumbledore visit more frequently. The railway station that serves the village is actually on the other side of Hogwarts , and this is where the Hogwarts Express drops students off at the beginning of each school year

No New Posts the hogshead

The Hog's Head is another pub, which often attracts a more unusual and private clientele than the Three Broomsticks, and many of the customers hide their faces. The hanging sign on the front of the pub has a severed boar's head, leaking blood onto the white cloth around it. The pub itself is filthy, with the floor covered with layers of dirt, and the windows smeared with so much grime that little light gets through. The main floor is a single room, but there are additional rooms on the upper floors. Harry notes that the pub smells strongly of goats. The bartender is Aberforth Dumbledore, the brother of Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

No New Posts the shrieking shack

The Shrieking Shack, on the outskirts of Hogsmeade, is believed to be the most haunted building in Great Britain. Connected to Hogwarts by a secret tunnel, the Shrieking Shack was used by Remus Lupin, a werewolf, to hide during the full moon to avoid harming fellow students or others. The villagers heard the noise and mistook it for violent spirits. This rumour, encouraged by Hogwarts' Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, led to the Shrieking Shack being officially regarded as the most haunted building in Britain

DIAGON ALLEY

No New Posts the shops

Tapping just the right brick in the wall behind the Leaky Cauldron in London ("Three up...two across...") will reveal an archway which is a portal into Diagon Alley, a long cobbled street where is to be found a strange and exciting assortment of shops and restaurants. It is unquestionably the hub of commerce in the British wizarding world, with virtually every wizarding business stationed there. Consequently, the demand for space here is steep, and rent costs "loads of Galleons

No New Posts street peddlers

There have always been street peddlers on Diagon Alley, and shoppers have always had reason to be wary of them (such as when "Honest Willy Wagstaff" managed to sell substandard wands and loose-bottomed cauldrons a few years back However, once Voldemort returned, wizards looking to capitalize on the public fear managed to sell even sketchier items, from Metamorph-medals that simply made the purchaser turn orange or sprout tentacles

No New Posts gringotts bank

the only known bank of the wizarding world and it is operated primarily by goblins. A snowy white building, near the intersection of Knockturn Alley and Diagon Alley, Gringotts towers over all neighbouring shops. Customers pass through a set of bronze doors and then silver ones before entering the lobby. The main floor is paved with marble and has long counters stretching along its length. Within, wizards and witches keep their money and other valuables in vaults that are protected by very complex and strong security measures. The vaults extend for miles under London and are accessible through rough stone passageways and then by means of magic carts that travel speedily along their tracks. Gringotts also offers Muggle-Wizarding currency exchange

No New Posts the daily prophet

The newspaper of the Wizarding World is called The Daily Prophet. It has been in existence since at least 1883, since Quidditch Through the Ages cites its coverage of Quidditch from that time It has offices in Diagon Alley and publishes an edition every morning. Evening editions are also printed, and these can apparently be delivered very quickly after an important story breaks. A witch or wizard anywhere in Britain can have a copy in hand within a short time of publication One of the Muggles who spotted them was in Peebles, which is relatively close to Hogwarts, so the story couldn't have been more than an hour old at that point. Alternatively, the text of a copy of the Prophet delivered in the morning might change as the day wears on with the latest news using something similar to the Protean Charm. Typically, the Prophet is delivered each morning by owl post A subscription can be paid for in advance or the recipient can pay for the newspaper when it arrives by putting the coins in a small pouch on the leg of the post owl who delivers it.

No New Posts the leaky cauldron

Built by Daisy Dodderidge around 1500 "to serve as a gateway between the non-wizarding world and Diagon Alley the Leaky Cauldron has remained a famous and popular place for five hundred years . Located not in Diagon Alley proper but on the outside, on Charing Cross Road in the heart of London the pub is "tiny" and "grubby-looking," sandwhiched between a book shop and a record shop where passing Muggles don't seem to be able to see it . Today, the shop is owned and run by a toothless old man named Tom (PA3), and also employs a dishwasher and possibly a maid.

The tavern sees quite a lot of traffic and is frequently crowded. While this can be partly attributed to its reputation as a welcoming place , it also seems to largely be due to it location as a hub for Diagon Alley. For example, Muggle-born wizards arriving by foot or by underground must pass through the Leaky Cauldron to reach Diagon Alley ; fireplaces here serve as the Floo connection between Diagon Alley and the rest of the wizarding world ; and when the Knight Bus drops Harry off for Diagon Alley, it is at the Leaky Cauldron's front door . To reach Diagon Alley from the pub, wizards enter a small walled courtyard behind the building and tap the brick wall, which then opens up to allow them to pass through .

No New Posts knockturn alley

Just around the corner from Diagon Alley lies a dark, twisting alleyway devoted to the Dark Arts: Knockturn Alley. It's a place that the Weasley children are not allowed in, and with good reason; not only are the wares sold their a bit dodgy, but the wizards hanging around behave fairly suspiciously as well. From the shops and the street vendors one can purchase, among other things, shrunken heads, poisonous candles, human-looking fingernails, and Flesh-Eating Slug Repellent

Founded in late 1500s or early 1600s by Mungo Bonham St. Mungo's Hospital is the primary (and likely only) wizarding hospital in Britain. Located in an abandoned department store in London, the hospital's Healers treat wizards for all sorts of magic-related illnesses and injuries and in extreme circumstances has been known to treat Muggles as well The hospital's logo is a wand and a bone, crossed and donations are welcome.
